Rome.

Rome was the capital city of the nation-state of Italy, located on Earth's European continent.

History and specifics[]

Rome was located at the confluence of the Tiber and Aniene rivers, near the western coast of Italy. The Federation starships USS Rome were named for this city.

The city has played a major role in shaping Earth history. Rome was the capital of the Roman Republic, and would later become the capital of the Roman Empire - the largest and most powerful empire in classical western civilization. (TOS episode: "By Any Other Name"; TNG novel: The Captains' Honor)

Hannibal attempted to attack Rome in 218 BC. (DS9 novel: Antimatter)

An alternate timeline was created when Trengur used time travel to commandeer Hannibal's troops and conquer Rome. (TOS comic: "No Time Like the Past")

Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor who was both warrior and philosopher from Rome. (DS9 - Avatar novel: Avatar, Book One)

During World War III, undetonated or failed explosive devices were located in Rome. (ST short story: "The Immortality Blues")

In the year 2266, James T. Kirk, Spock, Leonard McCoy and Montgomery Scott attended a speech at the Colosseum in Rome. (TOS comic: "Prophet of Peace")

When a landing party from the USS Enterprise encountered the Guardian of Forever on the planet Gateway in 2267, the Guardian displayed images from Ancient Rome. (TOS - Crucible novel: The Fire and the Rose)

Khan Noonien Singh described a possible end to the Eugenics Wars where Earth would unite and make great accomplishments, as when Julius Caesar rose to power and brought Rome to great heights of civilization. (TOS episode: "Space Seed")

Rome and the surrounding area were the subject of much archaeological study in the modern age, as the city was built in layers upon ruins of previous eras. (CoE eBook: Ghost)

Prynn Tenmei visited Rome when she, Elias Vaughn and Ruriko Tenmei lived in Tuscany. (DS9 - Worlds of DS9 novel: Andor: Paradigm)

The first seven ships beyond the prototype USS Vesta of the Vesta-class were named after the seven hills of Rome: Aventine, Capitoline, Esquiline, Quirinal and Viminal. (TOSC Issue Bonus Edition 6: "USS Aventine")

The remaining hills are Caelian and Palatine.
