In the Kelvin timeline created by Nero, this type of Romulan bird-of-prey was in service to the Romulan Star Empire in the mid-23rd century.
History[]
In 2259, a squadron of three birds-of-prey apprehended a military shuttle from the Federation starship USS Enterprise in the Romulan Neutral Zone. The shuttlecraft was seized and its occupants brought aboard, where the squadron's commanding officer questioned Captain James T. Kirk about his motives. One of the ships transported them to Romulus. (TOS comic: "Vulcan's Vengeance, Part 1")
The ships were later replaced by a larger class of vessel that utilized technology derived from the USS Vengeance. (TOS - The Khitomer Conflict comics: "Part 1", "Part 2", "Part 3", "Part 4")
