Neural-paralyzer

Chemical makeup of the neural paralyzer Ronoxoline-D.

Ronoxoline-D is a drug, a type of neural paralyzer.

History and specifics[]

Ronoxoline-D was discovered on Delta Orionis IV by Orion medical students. Within 5 to 10 minutes of injecting a 5-cc dose into a patient, this hypnotic depressant severely decreases activity in the central nervous system – to the point where the patient might seem dead. This condition persists for 5 to 20 minutes. (ST reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual)

In 2267, when Spock underwent pon farr on Vulcan and faced Captain James T. Kirk in a ceremonial combat to the death, T'Pau allowed Leonard McCoy to inject Kirk with a tri-ox compound to help him breathe in the thin Vulcan atmosphere. In actuality, however, McCoy injected Kirk with this neural paralyzer to prematurely end the fight and save his life. Kirk revived shortly afterward in sickbay aboard the USS Enterprise. (TOS episode & Star Trek 3 novelization: Amok Time)

In 2269, Spock was forced to relive the traumatic experience telepathically through an Arivne on the planet Anomaly. Spock recalled that McCoy injected Kirk with Ronoxoline-D to simulate death. (TOS novel: Planet of Judgment)

The novel provided a name for the neural paralyzer cited in the episode and reference work.
