Rope was a length of fibers wound together like a thicker string or cord. It was commonly used for climbing, pulling or securing items.

In 2266, Spock used a rope to pull James T. Kirk, Leonard McCoy, and Ross Johnson up a cliff on Metamorpha. (TOS comic: "The Peril of Planet Quick Change")

In 2268, Starfleet used synthetic-fiber to create ropes. Cervantes Quinn used a synthetic-fiber rope to rescue Bridget McLellan when she had fallen down a crevasse in the Jinoteur system. (VAN - Declassified novella: The Stars Look Down)
