Roy Dunsel was a Human male Earth Starfleet officer in the 22nd century.

History[]

He commanded Earth's third NX-class starship, the Challenger (NX-03).

In March 2156, the Challenger and the USS Yorktown visited the planet Andoria. Dunsel invited Yorktown's CO, Captain Ketai Shosetsu for a tour and a dinner aboard Challenger. In the middle of the dinner, his communications officer Ensign Hendricks contacted him about a cascading pattern of node failures in Andoria's warp detection grid.

This foreshadowed a Romulan attack. In the unfolding battle, the Romulan warbird Dhivael took control of Challenger and Dunsel was forced to activate the ship's self destruct system. He and his entire crew were killed, but their sacrifice prevented the Romulans from attacking Andorian cities and capturing an NX-class starship. (ENT novel: Beneath the Raptor's Wing)

Dunsel's name would, over the next few decades, pass into Starfleet Academy lore as a term used by cadets to describe a piece of equipment which serves no useful purpose. (TOS episode: "The Ultimate Computer")

Since the real Captain Dunsel's sacrifice did serve an extremely useful purpose, it is unknown how his name came to be remembered in this manner. However it is possible that no one ever knew of Dunsel's heroic death.
