The Roylans are a diminutive humanoid civilization native to the planet Royla. They have green bony skin and short eyestalks in black sockets, with scaly bodies and clawed digits. They have five fingers on each hand and four toes on each foot. The shape of the bony marks on their heads vary widely from individual to individual. They appear to be a peaceful culture who lived in settlements consisting of tall, column-like buildings connected by long narrow walkways.(TOS comic: "IDW Star Trek, Issue 14")

Apparently Roylans don't need to eat much, as Montgomery Scott mentions that Keenser could eat a bean and be done for a week, although it is unknown if this is actually true or if Scotty was just exaggerating. (TOS movie & novelization: Star Trek)

They also appear to have acidic mucus, and when they sneeze said mucus can dissolve metal. (TOS movie: Star Trek Beyond)

History[]

First contact between the Roylans and United Federation of Planets occurred in 2230, accomplished by the crew of the USS Kelvin and at which Keenser became the first member of the species to leave the homeworld. (TOS comic: "IDW Star Trek, Issue 14", ST website: StarTrek.com)

The StarTrek.com article states that it is unclear whether Keenser's species are Federation members or not. The website also suggests they may be mute (which is untrue in the films) or just unwilling or unable to use the universal translator. The name of this species was not mentioned in spoken dialogue in Into Darkness or Star Trek, but is derived from comics.
