RomulanEmblem

Emblem of the Romulan Star Empire.

Ruanek was a male Romulan in the late 23rd and the 24th century, and a member of House Minor Strevon and son of Stavenek.

Personality[]

Ruanek was clever, quick-witted, had a sense of humor, enjoyed engaging in word duels (even with adversaries), and had a deep respect for honor and honorable individuals. Leonard McCoy thought Ruanek was a fairly decent fellow and a "nice youngster", despite his politics. Ruanek considered himself a warrior, but did not have an easy time watching innocents suffer, and generally tried to avoid needlessly endangering or hurting innocents whenever possible. He'd also employ the sternest self-control to avoid reacting with a warrior's reflexes if doing so would result in the death of someone he'd come to respect. Though he didn't like doing it, Ruanek wasn't above using people to further his purposes. Though he was at first proud to serve his race and possibly win glory for himself and his house, Ruanek found there could be no glory in serving a madman, and became unsure of himself and experienced self-doubts after a while of being forced to turn a blind eye to all the wrongdoings going on around him and/or being done by his own hand. (TOS novel: Vulcan's Forge)

Personal Interests[]

Ruanek appeared to enjoy gambling to some extent, playing craps and wagering a bold amount of money that Spock would win over Sered when the two fought in 2296. (TOS novel: Vulcan's Forge)

Due in part to the musings of Leonard McCoy (whom Ruanek referred to as Makkhoi) about racehorses in 2296, Ruanek developed an interest in horses as both war beasts and racing creatures. This interest prompted McCoy to joke that Ruanek should find a way to smuggle horses across the Romulan Neutral Zone if he'd won enough money to set himself up as a breeder. (TOS novel: Vulcan's Forge)

Biography[]

In 2296, he was a Centurion serving under Commander Avrak of the IRW Adamant. Serving with him was his cousin, Kharik. In that year, he led the Romulan troops allied with Vulcan dissident Sered, with the goal of weakening support for the Starfleet mission on the Federation protectorate world of Obsidian. During this time, Ruanek guarded a Starfleet hostage, Leonard McCoy, and found the doctor to be a more honorable man than the insane Sered. When Captain Spock arrived with a war party to rescue McCoy, Ruanek had his troops hold their fire, and offered his moral support to Spock in his physical confrontation with Sered. (TOS novel: Vulcan's Forge)

Ruanek returned to Romulan space, and for years to follow, regularly supplied Spock with information from within the Empire. In 2344, Ruanek helped Spock escape from Romulus and back to Vulcan after the deposing of the mad Praetor Dralath. After leaving Romulan space behind, Ruanek relocated to planet Vulcan, where he married a Vulcan healer named T'Selis. (TOS novel: Vulcan's Heart)

In 2369, Ruanek, then holding the position of Legate on Vulcan, accepted Vice-proconsul M'ret and his aides on Vulcan following their defection from the Empire. (TNG - The Sky's the Limit short story: "Turncoats")

In 2374, during the Dominion War, Ruanek returned to Romulus despite the risk of facing a Romulan death penalty after the assassination of Emperor Shiarkiek. Ruanek helped Spock investigate the murder and coax a confession out of the murderer, Archpriest N'Gathan. (ST - Tales of the Dominion War short story: "Blood Sacrifice")

Ruanek assisted Spock during the Watraii affair in 2377. (TOS - Vulcan's Soul novels: Exodus, Exiles, Epiphany)
