The SS Tsiolkovsky (registry NCC-53911 or NCC-20001or NCC-640, Cyrillic: К.Э. Циолковский) was a Federation starship, an Oberth-class (class V Sagan-subclass) science vessel, built at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, USSR and commissioned on stardate 40291.7 (reference stardate 2/8603).
History and disposition[]
In 2362, the Tsiolkovsky conducted a clandestine survey of Rogun II to avoid being spotted by the indigenous population. (Last Unicorn RPG module: The Crusoe Effect)
In 2364, the Tsiolkovsky was assigned to observe the collapse of a red giant star. During that mission the crew fell victim to a form of polywater intoxication. After losing contact, Starfleet ordered the USS Enterprise-D to investigate the fate of the vessel and its 80 crew members. The Tsiolkovsky was discovered adrift in space, its bridge open to space due to an open emergency hatch, with all hands lost. When the Enterprise crew became infected with the same virus, and was in danger from a stellar core fragment, the Tsiolkovsky was used to block its path, destroying the vessel in the process. (TNG episode: "The Naked Now")
Tsiolkovsky was recorded as being lost on reference stardate 3/0305. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual)
