The Sagan class was a 25th century Federation starship type, a four-nacelled class derived from the 23rd century Constellation-class heavy cruiser[2], in Starfleet service in the 2400s decade. (PIC episode: "The Star Gazer")
Technical specifications[]
Predecessor[]
In the 24th century, a previous Sagan-subclass was a class V research vessel starship, a variation of the Oberth-class scout. This class became active on reference stardate 2/8502 and ceased production on 2/9608. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual)
Configuration[]
The modern Sagan class echoed older Starfleet classes in its configuration, specifically the 23rd century Constellation- and Radiant-class cruisers. A saucer section attached to a compact secondary hull was common among these classes. Another shared feature was the set of four warp nacelles, with nacelle pylons holding a pair above and below the main hulls, respectively.
The bridge dome was located on the dorsal center of of the primary hull. Behind it, an extended landing bay connected to the shuttlebay at the aft end of the secondary hull. The shuttlebay was flanked on either side by impulse engines. The deflector dish was located on the ventral saucer, facing forward. (PIC episode: "The Star Gazer")
Technology and systems[]
A Sagan-class starship defended itself with bubble-like deflector shields and phaser beam arrays, concentrated in phaser strips around the hull.
The USS Stargazer was the first in a class of ships equipped with technology derived from the derelict Borg cube known as the Artifact.
Service history[]
In 2400s, the Stargazer was under the command of Captain Cristóbal Rios. In the year 2401, Starfleet Command dispatched Rios' ship to a spatial anomaly discovered by the USS Avalon. When the Borg emerged from the anomaly, Starfleet assembled an armada around the Stargazer. The Borg Queen boarded the Stargazer and used its Borg-enhanced systems to seize control of the Stargazer armada, until Admiral Jean-Luc Picard self destructed the Stargazer.
