The African continent on planet Earth.

The Sahara was a vast desert on the continent of Africa on the planet Earth. The nation-states of Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Sudan, Tunisia and Western Sahara were located in the region.

Specifics[]

With an average temperature of 40° Celsius, the Sahara was one of the hottest regions on Earth. (Decipher RPG module: Narrator's Guide) It was known for being extremely arid and inhospitable. (ENT - Tales from the Captain's Table novel: Have Beagle, Will Travel: The Legend of Porthos, TOS novel: Enterprise: The First Adventure)

It occupied nine million square kilometers. Its sand dunes could reach as high as 200 meters. Although mostly desolate, it had 90 large oases and a number of smaller ones where underground springs provided water. (TOS novel: The Captain's Daughter)

Portions of Romulus were comparable to the Sahara. (FASA RPG module: The Romulans: Starfleet Intelligence Manual)

The desert world New Sahara in the Oeth system was named for the region, just as arctic New Siberia was named for Siberia. (FASA RPG module: The Triangle)

History[]

The Sahara once was covered with grasslands. (Last Unicorn RPG module: Planets of the UFP)

In the 2150s decade, Linguist Lily Sato kept a copy of Languages of the Sub-Sahara in her quarters aboard the Earth Starfleet starship Enterprise. (ENT episode & novelization: The Expanse)

By the early 2270s, Khan Noonien Singh observed that desertification on Ceti Alpha V had made it comparable to the Sahara in five years. (TOS novel: To Reign in Hell: The Exile of Khan Noonien Singh)

While walking near the Vulcan Science Academy in 2275, James T. Kirk idly mused that the planet Vulcan should have been named after the Sahara. (TOS novel: Spock's World)

Terraforming[]

In May 2160, the Green Sahara project aimed to redirect comets from the Kuiper belt to the region and help restore its ecology through terraforming. (ENT - The Romulan War novel: To Brave the Storm)

In 2266, Alfred Bleikoff visited the Great Pyramid at Giza, remarking at how well the desert had been reclaimed since the 1990s. (TOS comic: "Prophet of Peace")

By the 23rd century, terraforming and other techniques allowed private investors to develop the municipality of Demora in the reclaimed area as a tourist attraction. Pavel Chekov and Hikaru Sulu visited the area in the early 2270s while the USS Enterprise was undergoing a refit. During an adventure there, Sulu met Ling Sui, the mother of their daughter Demora Sulu, and fought a trio of thieves. (TOS novel: The Captain's Daughter)

In the 24th century, the Sahara Reclamation Zone was still considered a frontier area. (TNG novel: Infiltrator)
