The Saladin class was a type of Federation starship in service in the 2250s of the alternate reality created by Nero in 2233. Because of the temporal incursion, Starfleet developed new starship designs[citation needed] including the Saladin class. (TOS - Starfleet Academy novel: The Gemini Agent)
Development History
Built alongside the Hermes-class, the Saladin-class and the Hermes class were designed to be the replacement of the aging Einstein-class that had been in service for at least 25 years as of 2258. (TOS - Starfleet Academy novel: The Gemini Agent)
The Saladin class was identical to the Einstein class starships with the exception of the secondary hull.
It is possible that the alternate reality Saladin class vessels were actually prime Saladin-class ships that were never refitted after the timeline change in 2233.[citation needed]
