In the Kelvin timeline, the Saladin class[2] was a 23rd century Federation starship type, a destroyer[1] and interceptor[2] in Starfleet service in the 2250s[1] and 2260s[2] decades. (TOS - Starfleet Academy novel: The Gemini Agent, ST video game: Fleet Command)

Specifications[]

Physical appearance[]

Structurally, the Saladin class consisted of a circular saucer section and an a single, underslung warp nacelle. The bride set atop the central bulge of the saucer. A raised section extended from the back of the bridge to the rear of the saucer. This small engineering hull included the ship's shuttlebay. The red-glowing impulse engine was directly below. Another impulse engine, glowing blue, sat at the aft end of the warp nacelle. The deflector dish was attached on the ventral saucer, facing forwards. The nacelle was suspended from the primary hull by a vertically short but horizontally long nacelle pylon. (ST video game: Fleet Command)

Overall, the Saladin resembled an Einstein-class scout, except for the missing engineering hull held above the saucer, and the positions of deflector and shuttlebay. (TOS video game: Bridge Crew)

The Hermes-class scouts[1] visually[4] shared the saucer-nacelle configuration of the Saladin. (TOS video game: Rivals)

In the late 2250s, the ventral sensor dome was large and half-spherical. A round deflector dish jutted out from its forward end. (TOS video game: Bridge Crew)

By the early 2260s, the sensor dome matched those of the visually related ship classes, and a small, ellipsoid section extended forward from it, with the deflector dish of the same shape at ots front end. (ST video game: Fleet Command)

Technical[]

In fact, the Saladin class was based on the older Mayflower-class explorer starship, which held a pair of warp nacelles below the saucer, one on either rear quarter. (ST video game: Fleet Command)

In the 2250s, the Saladin class fulfilled the role of a destroyer. (TOS - Starfleet Academy novel: The Gemini Agent)

In the 2260s, they were called interceptors. Ships of the class were comparatively small, maneuverable, and designed for starship dogfights. The ship could receive upgrades to its base systems for improved performance, e.g. weapons, cargo space and warp engine. (ST video game: Fleet Command)

A Saladin was armed with phaser arrays that fired red-colored bursts in rapid succession., and at least one photon torpedo launcher. Vessels of this class were a match for Klingon D5-class light patrol ships and could hold their own for a while against Bortas-class Klingon warbirds but not win in a prolonged engagement (TOS video game: Bridge Crew)

In the 2260s, ships of this type were deployed for outpost and space station defense, and system patrols. They now could also fire phaser beams and used for mining asteroids. (ST video game: Fleet Command)

Technology[]

Ships of the class could be produced when accessing their blueprints. Besides the Federation, the Independent faction active in the Neutral zone had access to these. Like any ship used by these three groups, it's maximum warp factor, warp eight, matched that of the Federation flagship USS Enterprise}. The defense consisted of deflector shields, offense of phaser arrays and photon torpedo launchers. (ST video game: Fleet Command)

Service history[]

The USS Saladin was the prototype of the class. It was launched sometime after the Mayflower-class had entered service. (ST video game: Fleet Command)

In the year 2255, four Saladin-class destroyers were assigned to Task Force Blue as part of the Starfleet Academy training exercise Zeta Fleet Training Exercise at Saturn. As part of the exercise, the ships of the task force were crewed by Starfleet cadets. (TOS - Starfleet Academy novel: The Gemini Agent)

Following the destruction of Vulcan[5] in 2258, the USS Suribachi was a powerful combat support ship deployed to survey the Trench and participate in the Starfleet presence countering Klingon Empire interests in the region.

On stardate 2258.61, the model starship display in the USS Aegis observation lounge included a golden Saladin-class starship, right beside an Einstein-class vessel. (TOS video game: Bridge Crew)

By 2262, numerous Saladin-class interceptors patrolled Federation star systems. Some vessels of this class were used by Independent mercenaries in the disputed Neutral Zone. (ST video game: Fleet Command)

In 2263, the USS Concord was sliced apart by a Borg cutting beam. The Borg destroyed the ship and captured its captain. (TOS - Boldly Go comic: "Issue 2")

Alternate timelines[]

The appearance/role duality between the Saladin and Hermes classes was mirrored by their Saladin- and Hermes-class counterparts in the prime universe. (ST reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual)
