Saurian brandy is an alcoholic drink, a type of brandy manufactured by Saurians, a reptilian-type species from the planet Sauria. (ST reference: The Worlds of the Federation)
Specifics[]
It was made from Saurian cluster fruit high in manose crystals that grew well in Sauria's atmosphere, lower in oxygen than on Earth, and fermentation resulted in fructose. This was different than on Earth, where maltose crystals fermented into fusel oils. As a result, one could not make Saurian brandy under normal Earth conditions. During the 2260s decade, Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott and Doctor Leonard McCoy were able to formulate a comparable beverage using Earth ingredients orange rind, vodka, sugar, and maple syrup. During a raid of a hidden Cardassian base in 2328, Lieutenant David Gold and his crewmates discovered a large supply of Saurian brandy and other exotic liquor in the commandant's office. While waiting after the operation to be retrieved by the USS Gettysburg, he and four colleagues proceeded to drink much of it. When the USS Enterprise-D rescued Montgomery Scott from the USS Jenolin, Guinan considered bringing him a bottle of Saurian brandy, but decided he was disoriented enough without seeing her. However, she did bring him a bottle and admit she had been aboard at that time when Scott rendezvoused temporarily with the Enterprise-D in 2370. After Scott led the Enterprise back in time in an ill-fated attempt to rescue Kirk before his apparent death, Guinan offered Jean-Luc Picard a glass while she apologized for not being completely open with him, a glass the Captain did not drink.
