Savel chose to pursue a career in medicine rather than as a science officer because he believed that compassion was inherently logical, and that serving others was the greatest achievement to which any being could aspire.
During his career he served on a total of eight starships, six of them as CMO. (STO mission: "First Contact Day")

Savel noted that regardless of the duty posting he always encountered at least one patient who found his bedside manner lacking and attributed it to his being Vulcan. Savel himself believed he had no time for a bedside manner. (STO mission: "First Contact Day")
