Schmitter was a 23rd century Human man. He was a miner who worked at the Pergium Production Station mining colony on Janus VI in the 2260s.
Biography[]
In the year 2267, when a Horta began killing people, Schmitter relieved Sam on guard duty three levels below the main facility for a four-hour duty shift. He was aware that the Federation starship USS Enterprise was en route to assist and wished it would arrive quickly enough that he wouldn't have to stay for the whole shift. He also knew that Ed Appel had shot the Horta with a hand phaser to no avail.
Not long after he was left alone, Schmitter spotted the Horta approaching him in the tunnel and had time to scream. Sam, Wilson Vanderberg, and four other miners heard him and rushed back moments later, but Schmitter had already been killed. His murder marked nearly 50 casualties, and the fifth guard death in the mines. (TOS episode & Star Trek 4 novelization: The Devil in the Dark)
Dr. Leonard McCoy's autopsy showed that Schmitter died from exposure to a mixture of the corrosive acid aqua regia and the weaker hydrofluoric acid, which dissolves flesh. (TOS - Star Trek 4 novelization: The Devil in the Dark)
