A science officer is a member of a service organization who provides a commanding officer with science information and oversees investigations of scientific topics. On board Federation starships, the individual science officer is responsible for overseeing other scientists in the ship's crew. The science officer's station on a spacecraft bridge of most Federation starships includes extensive tie-ins to the various sensor systems, as well as links to the ship's library computer system.
