The Scientific Advisory Board was a group within the United Federation of Planets which concerned itself with scientific research.

History and specifics[]

In the 2260s, a SAB facility was located at Starfleet Headquarters. (TOS novelization: Mudd's Angels)

In 2269, the USS Enterprise sent a message to the Scientific Advisory Board describing the duplication of Spock and requesting analysis and advice. (TOS novel: Spock Must Die!)

In 2270, the board required a summary report, subsequently ordered by Starfleet, on various encounters with Harry Mudd by the crew of the USS Enterprise. After submitting it, Kirk lamented that it would never be read, as it focused on the facts. Their civilian passenger, J.A. Lawrence (Integrator), agreed to weave the crew's personal accounts into a more flavorful narrative reflecting Mudd's personality. (TOS novelization: Mudd's Angels)

It is unclear if the Scientific Advisory Board is an alternate name for the Federation Science Council, or if the two are separate entities.
A separate board with that name, part of the University of Alpha Centauri, was involved in the selection of honorees of the Zee-Magnees Prize in the 23rd century. (TOS - Crucible novel: Provenance of Shadows)
