The Second Romulan War was an interstellar conflict in the 25th century, a war between the United Federation of Planets and a Romulan faction. The Federation won this war. (ST - Strange New Worlds VI short story: "Guardians")

This event may be part of the First Splinter[1] timeline.

History and specifications[]

In 2409, Starfleet and the Tal Shiar-controlled Romulan Star Empire were embroiled in an undeclared war. Fleet Admiral T'nae of Starbase 39-Sierra orchestrated a preemptive strike against Romulan weapons manufacturing on Rator III to stifle Empress Sela's ability to start a Second Romulan War. (STO - Romulan Mystery mission: "Preemptive Strike")

Enterprise-F Odyssey-class

The USS Enterprise.

The war was underway by the 2460s decade. In the year 2462, the Romulans sacked Starfleet Headquarters in San Francisco on Earth. Starfleet worked quickly to restore their ravaged HQ and Boothby Gardens.

During a battle at the Rock of Ages, the USS Enterprise suffered casualties and heavy damage. Captain Edward Sherwood survived the "atrocity at the edge of forever" and reported the destruction of an orbital warbase to Fleet Admiral Ian Kyle Riker. Admiral Vandenberg proposed to offer the Horta to resettle from Janus IV to the Rock of Ages to protect the Guardian of Forever.

The colonization was undertaken in 2464. (ST - Strange New Worlds VI short story: "Guardians")

Legacy[]

At some point before 2525, the Federation became embroiled in the Third Great Earth-Romulan War after the "Sisko lie" about the assassination of Senator Merken Vreenak became public. (NF - Tales of the Dominion War short story: "Stone Cold Truths")

A Tal Shiar officer.

In 2696, a trio of Tal Shiar agents, still bitter about the Federation victory in the Second Romulan War, infiltrated the Rock of Ages to restore their empire but were stopped by the Horta colonists. (ST - Strange New Worlds VI short story: "Guardians")

By the year 2769, the Romulans had joined the Federation. (STO - Future Proof mission: "Time and Tide")

Alternate events[]

In one possible course of events, repeated Starfleet incursions into the Romulan Neutral Zone on stardate 54588.0, in the year 2376, triggered a ceaseless attack by the Romulan Star Navy against the nearby Federation and Borg Collective forces. (ST video game: Armada II mission: "Along the Neutral Zone", optional gameplay)

Alternate timeline[]

The Second Romulan War was a war between the United Federation of Planets and the Romulan Star Empire sometime in the 25th century of an alternate timeline. It started because the Order of Omega used Omega molecules to destabilize space, making large portions of the Alpha Quadrant impassible to warp travel. The Romulans were implicated in the crime, leading to war with the Federation. According to Timot Danlen, they were able to isolate this timeline. (DTI novel: Watching the Clock)

This cataclysmic timeline is a reference to the abortive animated series Star Trek: Final Frontier, proposed in 2006. The war described in this novel would have been the backstory to that series, in which the Federation has become a more xenophobic organization, mainly focused on protecting its borders. The Enterprise of the series would have been devoted to restoring Starfleet's more exploratory origins.
