For other uses, see Second contact.

Second contact is a contact protocol observed by governments and organizations within the Federation's sphere-of influence, a second visit or communication with new races and cultures, usually directly following a first contact. (LD episode: "Second Contact")

History and specifics[]

In 2368, Starfleet historian D.S. Whalen reported in an academic paper how a second-contact team of sociologists minimized the impact of a Starfleet communicator left behind on Sigma Iotia II. (PIC novel: Rogue Elements)

Ensign Brad Boimler recorded a personal log describing the importance of second contact in the year 2380. The log entry, whimsically stated as a "captain's log", went into the details of second contact, where the senior staff would verify the correct spelling of the new contacted race's name, and so on. (LD episode: "Second Contact")

In 2381, the Cerritos visited Apergos to finish second-contact duties. This included allowing the number-conscious Apergosian High Leader choose their frequency for subspace transmissions to the rest of the Federation. (LD episode: "Strange Energies")
