Starfleet Security assignment patch, circa the year 2154.
The role of security chief (or chief of security) was a title given to an individual responsible for the security of a team or crew in an outpost or facility or on a vehicle such as an aquatic ship or spacecraft. This role existed for both military and service operations (such as a navy or space fleet) as well as within civilian organizations.
History and specifics[]
On a Federation starship or outpost facility, the Starfleet officer with this role was in charge of the safety and well being of the crew, passengers, and cargo. The position could be combined with the position of tactical officer. The chief was usually aided by an assistant chief of security.
Acting security chief[]
An acting security chief is an officer assigned the position on a temporary basis, as a provisional officer.
Lieutenant JG Worf was made the Enterprise-D's acting chief of security after the death of Lieutenant Natasha Yar in the year 2364. (TNG episode: "Skin of Evil"; TNG novel: Diplomatic Implausibility)
Worf was confirmed into this position by early 2365, and began wearing the uniform of the operations division. (TNG episode: "The Child")
