In the Federation Starfleet in the 23rd and 24th centuries, security teams were part of the staff structure of starships and outposts.
Two security teams were deployed from the USS Enterprise-A in the year 2288. One team, of which Dietrich was a memeber, accompanied a Federation medical team to the planet Datugad. Hikaru Sulu amd Pavel Chekov, without proper orders, ordered another team to accompany them on the shuttlecraft Galileo to rescue the first groups from a hostage situation.
