See Schafer for other articles with titles that contain, either by relationship or by coincidence, this character's surname.

Shafer was a 23rd century Human who served in Starfleet aboard the Federation starship USS Enterprise under the command of Captain James T. Kirk in the 2260s.

Biography[]

In 2266, Shafer accompanied Captain James T. Kirk, Commander Spock, and Lieutenant Hurst to investigate lifesigns on an unexplored ice planet in Galaxy M-674. Beaming down in environmental suits rigged for extreme cold, they discovered two gleaming pillars amid the ice. Shafer asked Kirk what these structures might be, just as a telepathic humanoid approached. Calling himself the Guardian of the Future, he offered them entry into a time portal. Shafer and Hurst remained with the Guardian while Kirk and Spock walked through the portal and explored an alternate reality California. (TOS short story: "Gateway to the Future")
