Stardate 3163.2[]

The Enterprise is in orbit around the Earth to meet up with Doctor Bancroft, an archaeologist from The Foundation of Earth Studies. Kirk, Scotty, Spock and McCoy accompany him to Nova Scotia to investigate the remains of a ninteenth century sailing vessel.

Inside a hanger they see the remains of the object that was lashed to the Raleigh. McCoy mentions his "great-great-great-something grandfather" was on the Raleigh and there may be a journal. After inspecting the object, Spock notices some hieroglyphics on the metal. He tells the captain he may recognize them, but he wants to check the Enterprise computer. McCoy, Kirk, Spock, and Bancroft leave Scotty to further inspect the object.

Scotty removes the damaged panels and equipment, and starts inspecting the controls. Accidentally enabling the craft, he disappears in a flash of light, after which the craft rises, gets it's bearings, and takes off.

On the Enterprise, Uhura relays a message to Kirk about an unauthorized spacecraft leaving Earth. Recognizing the craft on sensors, Kirk asks Uhura to hail Scotty. Unable to do so, Kirk asks Spock for life signs abord the craft. Spock reports none on the craft or in the hanger on Earth. Kirk, Spock and McCoy head to the transporter room while Sulu captures the craft in a tractor beam.

Back in the hanger, Spock deteats energy reading consistant with molecular transport activity. He speculates that Scotty is in transport stasis aboard the craft.

They transport back to the Enterprise, In the shuttle bay, readings of the craft indicate a much more powerful transport occurred.Spock states Scotty could be anywhere within a hundred lightyears. McCoy tells Kirk and Spock what his ancestors journal contains. The Enterprise picks up an energy trail and Spock plots a course to persue, Sixteen hours later the Enterprise is in orbit around a rocky, barren planet. Detecting no life signs, Kirk, Spock and McCoy beam down.

They find themselves in an ancient dust covered room of instrument panels, Spock identifies it as a transport relay. Unable to stop the ancient machine from relaying the signal, they beam back to the Enterprise. Ariving at the next relay station, Spock discovers repairs are needed to get Scotty to the next destination.

While working Spock tells Kirk the relays were made by a race called the Carthians, an imperial society that ruled by conquest. After their empire became too lagre to hold, they started recruiting outside their region. McCoy sas they were Shanghaiing people to do their grunt work. Spock states no one knows the Carthians fate. Kirk asksif the next stop may be the Carthian homeworld. Spock thinks he is correct.

Arriving at the last station, they discover all the transporter relays are smashed with no time to repair them. Spock suggests gathering the transporter signal in the navigational deflector and redirecting it to the Carthian vessel on the Enterprise. The signal causes the molecular sequencers to fail but Spock is able to adjust and a bewildered Scotty appears on the transporter pad thinking he had been beamed from the hanger directly and asks to be sent back asking if they've gone daft.
