The Shenzhou class was a 25th century Federation starship class, a legendary light battlecruiser and variant subclass of the 23rd century Walker-class prototype light exploration cruiser, in Starfleet service from the 2410s decade. The class became reality with the launch of a brand-new USS Shenzhou (NCC-91220), serving alongside the recovered and refitted USS Shenzhou in 2411. The original Shenzhou was the command of Philippa Georgiou and was left abandoned for 150 years after the Battle of the Binary Stars in 2256. (DSC episode: "Battle at the Binary Stars", STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
In early 2411, at some point after stardate 87971.0[1] and soon after the Shattering of the Klingon Empire[2], Georgiou's legendary starship USS Shenzhou underwent a refit to become the lead ship of the uprated light battlecruiser series. As part of the process, a newly commissioned USS Shenzhou (NCC-91220) became the lead ship of the Shenzhou class. The ship followed the structure of the venerable Walker-class ships but interpreted with the streamlined, black-accented aesthetic of the 2410s. All Walker-based light battlecruiser subclasses were modular and their components interchangeable between them.

In the 25th century, the design of the Shenzhou-class legendary light battlecruiser allowed its commanding officer to choose from different designs of hull materials, which could be modified further at shipyards. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
Furthermore, the installation of deflector shields from specific factions modified the hull appearance, including shields from the Reman Resistance, the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion. (STO missions: "Coliseum", "Cold Storage", "Boldly They Rode")
