Shield generators were technology capable of creating deflector shields to protect a starship, starbase, or ground outpost installation.

History and specifics[]

The primary component of a deflector shield generator on Federation starships was the phaton, a mechanism invented by Professor Osric Whipple prior to the year 2233. (TOS comic: "Destination Annihilation", TOS movie & novelization: Star Trek)

In 2373, Jem'Hadar soldiers erected shield generators around the supply depot they established on Illarh. Gilaad Ben Zoma gathered intelligence about the generators and Starfleet was able to disable them. (STA - Tales of the Dominion War short story: "What Dreams May Come")

Bajor's largest cities had shield generators to protect them from orbital attack. (DS9 novel: Ascendance)
