Shock webbing, aka crash webbing, was a 22nd and 23rd century technology used aboard Starfleet shuttlecraft.

History and specifics[]

Shock webbing was a personal restraint system that could be engaged in hazardous situations, such as during crashes or when inertial dampeners were offline. When engaged, it automatically laced around shuttle pilots in the form of a corrugated mesh. When not in use, it was embedded within seat upholstery. (TOS novels: Firestorm, Rough Trails, Past Prologue)

In 2153, Enterprise's Shuttlepod 2 was outfitted with manually-deployed shock webbing. Travis Mayweather, D. Hideaki Chang, and David McCammon secured themselves with it as well as seat belts just before a Xindi mining facility exploded near the shuttlepod. (ENT novel: Last Full Measure)

In 2266, the cargo shuttle Caroline Herschel was equipped with shock webbing. (TOS - The Janus Gate novel: Past Prologue)

In 2273, during a rocky transit aboard the shuttle Gamow, Nyota Uhura insisted that Hikaru Sulu wait to engage their shock webbing until she could first secure Scott Mutchler and Wendy Metcalfe in the rear of the shuttle with safety straps. After their shuttle crashed, Uhura awoke within a tangle of the webbing. Later, aboard a rescue shuttle, she wrapped Pavel Chekov's unconscious body in shock webbing shortly before a volcano erupted. (TOS novel: Firestorm)

In 2275, Chekov temporarily secured prisoner Bartels within shock webbing from a cargo crate. Later, shock webbing deployed automatically to protect Uhura and Sulu as they flew a small antigravity "Bean" ship through a dust storm over the Belle Terre island subcontinent of Llano Verde. (TOS - New Earth novel: Rough Trails)
