See also TOS episode: "Shore Leave".

Shore leave is a period of time spent on shore, typically in the case of starship personnel on a planet away from their vessel.

Spock was ordered by USS Artemis Captain Daniels to take ten days of mandatory shore leave when Spock was waiting for his new assignment on the USS Enterprise in 2253. Spock chose Ka'a Beach as his leave location, although partway through he was called to Vulcan. (TOS novel: Vulcan's Glory)

As a twist of fate, the events that led to Spock's death prompted Admiral Harry Morrow's grant of extended shore leave for the USS Enterprise crew, in order to cope and fully recover from the recent Genesis incident until they were reassigned, as the Enterprise was scheduled to be decommissioned. (TOS movie: The Search for Spock)
