The Sierra class[1] was a 23rd century Federation space station type, a deep-space station[2] and starbase[3] in Starfleet service from the 2270s[4] to the 2410s[5] decades. (TOS novel: Agents of Influence, STO - Klingon War mission: "Starbase 24")

Specifications[]

Layout[]

Structurally, the Sierra-class consisted of a large saucer-shaped primary hull placed atop a long, slender, stalk-like secondary hull. The stalk housed the station's main power- and life support systems. The primary hull served as home for more than 1.000 Starfleet personnel, civilians, and transient visitors.

Overall, the Sierra class appeared like a smaller, trimmed-down counterpart to the massive Spacedock type starbases elsewhere in the Federation, like Earth Spacedock. (TOS novel: Agents of Influence)

A smaller, bulked-out section underneath the primary hull featured large shuttlebay/cargo doors.

By the 2400s, a large Federation logo was painted atop the saucer dome of every standard Sierra-class station. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Starbase 24")

Starbases of this class could be modified by attaching additional structures, like solar panels and drydocks. (STO - Warzone mission: "Keep Your Enemies Closer")

Another variant consisted of two primary hulls connected by their underside, like Starbase 82. It included the bulky section of the engineering hull but lacked the long stalk. (STO - Infected mission: "Infected: The Conduit")

Armaments[]

By 2270, at least some Sierra-class deep-space stations were armed, including Starbase 24. Around that time, Starbase 24 housed an impressive selection of phaser banks, photon torpedo launchers and deflector shields for its defense. (TOS novel: Agents of Influence)

Amenities[]

At the onset of the 2270s decade, Sierra-class stations like Starbase 24 were among Starfleet's most advanced facilities. Such a station hosted an expansive arboretum and botanical garden. Around that time, Starfleet planned upgrades for all Sierra-class station, including complete overhauls over the next 3 years from 2270. Upgrades on the list included the installation of terrestrial enclosures similar to those of Watchtower-class starbases. (TOS novel: Agents of Influence)

History[]

Deep-space stations of this configuration were in use by the year 2270. Among the most advanced and well-armed was Starbase 24, at the border to the Klingon Empire. Ensign Pavel Chekov familiarised himself with the upgrades planned for the Sierra class over the next 3 years. (TOS novel: Agents of Influence)

Stations of this class were ubiquitous in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants by the year 2409, including variant designs. (ST video game: Star Trek Online)

The Klingon Defense Force wasted massive fleet power and personnel in the Siege of Starbase 24 but failed to take the station. (STO - Klingon War missions: "Starbase 24", "Starbase 24 Rescue")

Some of these stations were given over to civilian operation, like Tazi Station. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Tazi System Patrol")

This station class served as template for the newer Fleet Starbase design. (STO - New Romulus mission: "Starbase 234 Patrol")
