The Smithsonian Institution is a research and educational institute and museum complex located on Earth. Most of the Smithsonian's facilities are located in Washington, DC, but the Smithsonian also had facilities in New York City, Virginia, Panama, and elsewhere. The Smithsonian was initially administered by the United States of America.

History and specifics[]

Roberta Lincoln and her family visited the Smithsonian in Washington in late 2008, along with other Washington landmarks. (TOS - Star Trek: Assignment: Earth comic: "My Name Is Legion")

Among the millions of items in the Smithsonian's collections as of the late 23rd century were three 20th and early 21st century Terran space probes, recovered in deep space by Captain Anne Gauvreau of the SS Ian Shelton. The Smithsonian paid 50 kilocredits a piece for these acquisitions. (TOS novel: Prime Directive)

One of the most famous items located in the Smithsonian was the Phoenix, humanity's first warp capable vessel. Captain Jean-Luc Picard had often seen the Phoenix while visiting the Smithsonian. (TNG movie: Star Trek: First Contact)

In 2162 and 2163, the Enterprise NX-01 was exhibited at the Smithsonian Orbital Annex. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: A Choice of Futures)

In the 23rd century, the Enterprise space shuttle was usually exhibited at the Smithsonian's facility in Virginia. (TOS novel: A Flag Full of Stars)

Starship data libraries were routinely updated with information from the Smithsonian, as well as several other Earth institutions. (TOS novel: Spock's World)

Katherine Pulaski once saw a circus wagon at the Smithsonian. She recalled the experience in 2365 on Lorca. (TNG novel: Masks)

By the late 24th century, the Smithsonian was one of several museums visited by Starfleet cadets who took Starfleet Academy's Museum Studies course. (Last Unicorn RPG module: Starfleet Academy Handbook)

Historic aircraft on pubic display in the Smithsonian include the Spirit of St. Louis and the Wright Flyer, as well as an SR-71 Blackbird and Sopwith Camel.

Alternate timeline[]

In an alternate timeline created when Yeoman J. Mia Colt was sent forward in time from 2254 to 2293, the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) became a popular attraction at the San Francisco Smithsonian Museum of Air, Sea and Space after it was decommissioned. In 2293, Colt reappeared in her former quarters aboard the Enterprise, which she was astonished to discover had been relegated to being a museum exhibit. (EV comic: "Future Tense, Part Two")
