Montgomery Scott knew how to turn a sonic shower into a low-power disruptor; he once expressed to Matt Franklin upon meeting him and learning of his hero worship that the process of tuning a deflector dish into a photon torpedo was similar, in that a good engineer needed to rip devices apart and try to put them together wrong in order to see how they worked.
