Map of Sigma Iotia II.

The Southside Territory was one of the largest nation states on Sigma Iotia II. (TOS episode & Star Trek 4 novelization: A Piece of the Action)

History and specifics[]

Its boundaries included southern portions of Ekal continent [1]. It also included the southern continent of the planet [2], known as Landek [1]. (Decipher RPG module: Worlds, TOS - Year Five - Odyssey's End comic: "Issue 3")

By the 2260s decade, Jojo Krako was its leading representative, serving as Boss, pushing back against Northside Territory aggression led by Bela Okmyx. A unified planetary government was formed with guidance from James T. Kirk in 2268, with the southside serving as part of a syndicate. (TOS episode & Star Trek 4 novelization: A Piece of the Action)

Southern political priorities were centered around space exploration, and its scientists used database information from Leonard McCoy's forgotten communicator to develop several interplanetary spacecraft and even a few prototype warp ships. They also launched the Delta Base space station into Iotian orbit. Unfortunately, the unified government soon began defunding and neglecting Southside goals. As a result, none of the warp ships had yet achieved warp speed, and their station began to deorbit. Just prior to presidential election day, Krako lamented to Commander Spock that none of their Astro-Liberation Party candidates could win more than one percent of the vote. Spock volunteered to run as their candidate with a platform based on Southside grievances. Spock won, but had to resign, as Starfleet officers were prohibited from holding public office. However, he nominated Krako to a seat in a proposed triumvirate council intended to provide more balanced representation of southern interests. (TOS - Year Five - Odyssey's End comics: "Issue 3", "Issue 4")

By the early 24th century, Boss Ivor Nyris had seen that the Northside superseded the Southside in the technological race. (Decipher RPG module: Worlds)
