Star chart of major space lanes highlighted in green in treaty boundary quadrant 1.
A Space lane or spacelane or warp-space lane or star lane was a line in interstellar space along which civilian travel usually happened. Starfleet occasionally recommended specific space lanes for civilian travelers. (TNG novel: Metamorphosis)
Specifics[]
Cutaway of a typical space lane.
Space lanes such as the Earth-Vulcan space lane were marked with navigational beacons. (TOS novel: Forgotten History)
Some lanes were tiered into primary or major spaces lanes. (TOS novels: The Shocks of Adversity, The Entropy Effect)
Each space lane segment was encoded with a unique ID code. Beacons at each point in a space lane used subspace communication ID signals and directional beams pointing to the next lane segment. The transmission provided instructions for travel in one of 16 concentric rings within the cross-section of the lane. Travel went one way in the innermost rings and the other way on the outermost rings, with the middle rings compensating for drift. (ST reference: Star Trek Maps)
Taverns built along popular space lanes in populated sectors observed a diverse variety of species visiting. (VOY novel: Fire Ship)
Access[]
Specific spacelanes may have required a clearance, such as spacelane Charlie 4 leaving the Sol system. This was made to avoid collisions in high traffic areas. (TOS - Starfleet Academy novel: Cadet Kirk)
Some starbases had designated starbase-approach spacelanes. (DS9 novel: Call to Arms...)
Maintenance and defense[]
The Starfleet Corps of Engineers routinely cleared alien debris from those lanes. (SCE short story: "Sargasso Sector")
Derf-class repair tender starships maintained spacelane navigation beacons. (FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)
Local space forces, including the Andorian Defense Force, defended spacelanes from piracy under authorization of the Federation Constitution. (Last Unicorn RPG module: The Andorians: Among the Clans)
Additionally Starfleet vessels regularly patrol space lanes between member worlds. [1]
History[]
In 2267, while traveling to Altair VI, the USS Enterprise was diverted to Vulcan. Pavel Chekov's navigational plot took advantage of space lanes. The starship entered the lane at the UAZ beacon, traveled along lane SL-488 to the YTP beacon, then transferred to lane SL-107 to the VLN beacon, the nearest to the Vulcan system. (ST reference: Star Trek Maps)
Circa 2359, Starfleet Academy used well travelled star lanes for six month-long training cruises for safe and non-urgent missions, like transport supplies between a number of planets. (TNG novel: Survivors)
Mirror universe[]
In the 24th century, Gorlan were known to stalk Klingon-Cardassian Alliance starships in the spacelanes. (Last Unicorn RPG module: Through a Glass, Darkly)
Examples[]
- spacelane Charlie 4
- spacelane Delta India Tango
- Earth-Vulcan space lane
