Space saver

A prototype space saver.

A space saver was a description for an otherwise unnamed 24th century Federation technology.

History and specifics[]

A space saver stored cargo within a dimensional pocket, a type of "unspace" that provided additional freight room similar to the way a warp engine expanded and contracted space. In theory, an entire freighter's consignment might be placed within a single space saver, exponentially increasing a starship's hauling capability and revolutionizing shipping.

In 2364, Orpheus transported a prototype space saver to a test facility. En route, however, an unexpected side effect was revealed. If a person touched the space saver while it was in operation, they were transported into the "unspace". Further, as that person was no longer within the universe, fellow crewmembers forgot that they existed. Doctor Beverly Crusher experienced this effect firsthand when she touched the device aboard Orpheus. It had to be opened in order for several absorbed personnel to escape back to the ship. (TOS - Waypoint - Special 2019 comic: "Unfathom")
