The Species 8472 launcher was a 24th century Species 8472 bioship class, an artillery ship armed with long-range weaponry in service in the 2370s decade. (ST video game: Armada II)

History and specifications[]

The launcher was a sleek bioship with a cockpit-like forward section and a wider secondary hull with a wide, vertically short engine exhaust at the aft end. It carried a pair of stanchions on either side, similar to the stanchions of a Nicor-class bioship. The launcher stood out from other Species 8472 ships with its yellow hull coloration and green, superficially window-like surface details. Species 8472 mutated launchers out of active embryos, which themselves were generated in mothers. (ST video game: Armada II)

The overall hull shape matched the 24th century Voth Citadel-class dreadnoughts and Voth city ships, at a smaller scale. (VOY novel: Acts of Contrition)

Species 8472 launchers were equipped with deflector shields, a warp drive and impulse engines, allowing it to move through fluidic space and the Milky Way Galaxy of the primary universe. Operating as an artillery ship, the launcher fired organic warheads. These torpedoes moved slower than regular torpedoes but dealt higher damage to targets. Once hit, a wave emanated from the point of impact. These torpedo launchers allowed a Species 8472 launcher ship combat a target from outside the target's weapons range.

Ships of the class were deployed by the people designated by the Borg as "Species 8472" by 2377. In that year, the Borg Collective and Species 8472 engaged renewed warfare. Launchers saw action during battles with the Borg and the Federation in the Alpha and Delta Quadrants of the Milky Way galaxy of the primary universe as well as in fluidic space itself. (ST video game: Armada II)

In 2379, launchers were part of a Starfleet Academy training simulation on Species 8472 taught by Lieutenant Commander Carey. In the training scenario, Carey directed the cadets to generate an active embryo and evolve it into a launcher, and use its weaponry to target a Klingon installation in fluidic space. (ST video game: Armada II mission: "Tutorial: Species 8472")
