Spica IX was a planetoid located in Sector 14C in the space of the galaxy's Beta Quadrant, the ninth planet in the Spica star system.

History and specifics[]

The planetoid was notable for being the source of Spican flame gems, which were mined from crystallized rock formations abundant on the surface. Its mineral content was 50% gemstones, 10% radioactives and 10% normal metals. The 100,000 miners who resided on the planet included 35% Tellarites and 20% Humans and represented several different Federation mining operations. The presence of the miners resulted in the world having a technological/sociopolitical index of 988985-99 and a planetary trade profile of BBCCDCCD(D).

Spica IX had a harsh arctic climate, was marginally class M, and had a thin atmosphere with a short day and light gravity. (FASA RPG module: The Federation)

Spica IX was also home to one of the largest topaline mines in the Federation. (TOS novel: The Klingon Gambit)
