Starbase 16 was a Federation starbase that was operational by the mid-23rd century, with a planetside facility as well as a space station outpost, located near the Tycho star system. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Constitution)

History and specifics[]

According to a Ports Illustrated profile on Starbase 16, facilities included an installation along the ocean floor of a water world. Surface landing fields, transmission antennae and other structures resided amid airy lattice towers. (Stardate Magazine vol. 2, Issue 8: "Some Star Bases: A Profile")

This base was in Starfleet Intelligence sector 1 ("NW sector intel"), which contained many colony and home star systems of Federation members. (FASA RPG module: Star Fleet Intelligence Manual)

Starbase 16 was located at coordinates 5.70N 2.00W in the general vicinity of the planets Babylon, Hollow Way and Lustrix. (FASA RPG module: The Federation)

Service history[]

In 2257, Lieutenant James T. Kirk had the USS Farragut divert to Starbase 16 for repairs following the death of 200 crewmembers after the encounter with a dikironium cloud creature. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Constitution)

In 2268, the USS Enterprise sent a message buoy to Starbase 16 because subspace communication was jammed. Later, Kirk thought Klingon Lieutenant Kislath would be tried and convicted at the starbase, but instead exchanged him to the Klingons for archeological artifacts taken from Alnath II. (TOS novel: The Klingon Gambit)

The Enterprise docked at Starbase 16 for shore leave in 2269, after successfully stopping a second Federation-Klingon war. (TOS novel: Spock Must Die!)

During the layover, well-known Swiss Chef Henri von Muralt visited the Enterprise and served fondue neuchateloise to the ship's crew. (TOS reference: Official Cooking Manual)

In 2269, the Great Starship Race to Gullrey was launched from Starbase 16. Following the race, the Enterprise docked at the base for structural repair following a high-warp pursuit of the ChR Red Talon. (TOS novel: The Great Starship Race)

In 2270, at Starbase 16 the Enterprise dropped off the surviving crew of the SS ArielRandi Bryce, Nancy Randolph, and Tom Markel. Kirk had planned on joining their debriefing, but instead the starship was immediately dispatched to conduct a number of survey missions with Commander Ari bn Bem aboard. Not long after the V'Ger incident in 2273, the USS Enterprise repatriated a rescued Federation film archivist and a captured alien thought-enhancer to Starbase 16, following a failed attempt by the Klingon Empire to take control of the newly-refitted starship using the latter technology. In 2279, the Belle Terre Colonial Expedition launched from Starbase 16, with the Enterprise leading a large group of colonization vessels to Occult IV in Cluster Z-80. (TOS - New Earth novel: Wagon Train to the Stars)

In 2280, Nick Keller recalled the expedition's departure from the starbase. (TOS - New Earth novel: Challenger)

One day in 2284, from 10:00 to 12:00 on Admiral Kirk's schedule was a notation that the command staff of Starbase 16 would be visiting. (TOS novel: Strangers from the Sky)
