Starbase 5 was a Federation facility constructed in the early 22nd century, and was originally in service to the United Earth Space Probe Agency.

History and specifics[]

It is located at coordinates 2.74N 1.23W. (FASA RPG module: The Federation)

It contained a base of operations for Starfleet Intelligence sector 1 and was indicated on one star chart to be in the general vicinity of Tellar and Zeta Geminorum. (FASA RPG module: Star Fleet Intelligence Manual)

Starbase 5 took three years to build. The core of an asteroid was melted via induction and then its interior blown outward with neon gas to form a hollow, spherical planetoid shell with a diameter of 8.1 kilometers. A 0.75 x 0.5 kilometer-wide door provided access to the interior. Inside, three axial support shafts crossed at the center, creating a mooring area for 24 ships. A multi-deck structure along the interior consisted of support facilities for 12,000 Starfleet personnel, hydroponics and six reactors, as well as an additional civilian settlement of 17,000. (Stardate Magazine vol. 2 (1985), Issue 8: "Some Star Bases: A Profile")

In the late 2140s decade, a major conference regarding the future of human spaceflight was held at the base. At the conference, Doctor Milton Kornheiser stated that warp factor 4 would be the fastest speed that any warp capable vessel would be able to achieve. (ST reference: Spaceflight Chronology)

In 2257, Lieutenant Spock, serving as science officer of the USS Enterprise under Captain Christopher Pike, had himself committed to the psychiatric facility at Starbase 5 while on extended leave from his duties. (DSC episode: "New Eden")

Spock inspected memories of his time at Starbase 5 with the help of Talosians and Michael Burnham on Talos IV. (DSC episode: "If Memory Serves")

When the Federation embassy on Grex was compromised by a rebellion, its staff were evacuated to Starbase 5. Barry Giotto was shot before departure and woke up at the base. (TOS - The Janus Gate novel: Past Prologue)

A memorable cocktail party took place at Starbase 5 prior to 2268. Gauri Vedra recalled the event's attendees as a who's who at Starfleet Command, where she, Joaquin Martinez and Jamal Banks of the USS Hood met James T. Kirk. Banks recalled the party in 2268 when he was inexplicably confronted by an android duplicate of Kirk on Exo III. (TOS novel: Double, Double)

Gordon Davidson served at Starbase 5 from 2260 to 2267. (FASA RPG module: The Strider Incident)

Commander Samir al-Halak traveled to Starbase 5 in 2336 on his way to Farius Prime, rather than making a planned trip to Betazed to meet with his lover, Anisar Batra. Batra eventually tracked Halak to the starbase. (TLE novel: Well of Souls)
