Starbase 718 was a Federation starbase located in the galaxy's Beta Quadrant near the Romulan Neutral Zone and was in operation to Starfleet in the 23rd and 24th centuries.

Service history[]

Starbase 718 was staffed with more than 200 personnel. The facility first entered service circa the 2240s decade, when Hikaru Sulu was a little boy, and its first commander was Sulu's mother, Demora Sulu. (TOS eBook: Shadow of the Machine)

In late 2364, Captain Jean-Luc Picard attended a conference on the base. (TNG episode: "The Neutral Zone")

In 2367, Starbase 718 was commanded by Admiral Sternberg. That year, the USS Enterprise-D brought a young alien boy named Barash, who had been found stranded on planet Alpha Onias III, to the base and turned him over to the Federation Displaced Persons Agency office there. Sternberg's crew studied Barash's former home in an effort to discover what had happened to the rest of his people, but were unable to reach any conclusions. (TNG novel: Losing the Peace)

In late 2375, the USS Monitor was to make a test run with its experimental transwarp drive between Starbase 324 and Starbase 718. Seventeen hours into the voyage, the Monitor's transwarp conduit inflated exponentially and the ship ended up over 350,000 light-years from its previous position. (ST novel: Captain's Peril)
