Starbase 9 was a Federation starbase constructed in the 22nd century, and was located somewhat near Sector 001.

History and specifics[]

The starbase consisted of an orbital space station facility, in orbit of a planet where a complex of the base is located. The star system where Starbase 9 was located was selected because it was a safe distance from a black star, a stellar phenomenon the base was equipped to study. Starbase 9 was also located near the borders of the space of the Miaplacidan Alliance. (ST comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek, Issue 2")

Starbase 9 was located not far from Pyris. A large complement of Starfleet science personnel monitored data from deep space monitoring stations. The facility was best known as a resupply post. (Last Unicorn RPG module: TOS Core Game Book)

At one point in the 23rd century, the USS Gates was forced to stop a nebula observation in order to return to the starbase for minor repairs. This led Robert April to conclude that more self-sufficient vessels were needed by Starfleet. (ST reference: Federation: The First 150 Years)

In the late 2250s decade, the USS Eagle docked at the Starbase 9 space station facility before embarking on a planetary survey of Caperna IV, during Commander James T. Kirk's first month as starship first officer. (TOS - Star-Crossed Miniseries comic: "Star-Crossed")

In 2267, the USS Enterprise was en route to Starbase 9, when they encountered a black star and were flung back in time to the 20th century. (TOS episode: "Tomorrow is Yesterday"; TOS - Crucible novel: Provenance of Shadows)

Later that year, the Enterprise was headed for shore leave at the starbase when Lieutenant Commander Montgomery Scott celebrated his birthday. Commander Tattinger was assigned to the starbase at the time. (TNG novelization: Relics)

In 2269, Starbase 9 was under the command of Commodore Lee Block. (Last Unicorn RPG module: TOS Core Game Book)

In the mid-23rd century, Starbase 9 was commanded by Commodore Markessan. He resided on the starbase's planetside facility with his family. In the early 2270s, Markessan's son, Tak Markessan, was involved in a tragic ground vehicle accident which cost the life of his girlfriend, Lorina. Grief-stricken, Tak left Starbase 9 shortly thereafter in a shuttlecraft, bound for the Miaplacidan Alliance. (TOS comic: "The Quality of Mercy")
