Starfleet Junior Academy

The Starfleet Junior Academy was a Starfleet school on the desert planet Rijar that offered Federation teenagers an educational summer camp, popularly known as "Space Camp".

History and specifics[]

Thirty-two spots were available, with Starfleet evaluating and approving nominees. Attendees were divided into four teams of eight, each with a Starfleet cadet leader to direct them. The camp lasted for two weeks, and students wore blue uniforms.

Its surface facility consisted of a central dome ringed and interconnected by eight others. The central dome contained staff offices and an auditorium. The northernmost dome contained operations and communications. East and West domes contained student quarters. Southern domes contained staff quarters. Facilities also included a holosuite.

In the 24th century, Benjamin Sisko attended the camp himself one summer.

In 2370, Jake Sisko and Nog attended. At that time, a Federation archeological team was stationed there to catalog recently uncovered artifacts excavated from a nearby ancient city. Students experienced several exercises, including one aboard the Gremlin in orbit, in the holosuite, as well as events like rock climbing, all for teamwork. When the sessions were over, Nog had changed his mind about Starfleet Academy, and was willing to consider being the first Ferengi in Starfleet. (DS9 - YA novel: Space Camp)
