The interim design uniform.

Around stardate 2/5501, the Federation Starfleet chose to adopt a new uniform design as general issue. This Starfleet uniform was created by clothing designers on New Paris as a response to concerns of the overly military look of the previous design dating back to the 2270s. This was described as an "interim design" and was not favorably received, being abolished some time afterwards. One main complain was the all-white color scheme, which many felt was more appropriate for contractors and technical personnel, rather than as a general issue for all personnel. Some of the main detractors of this uniform were representatives of the Zaranites, Centaurians and Andorians.

The uniform featured a white blouse with ribbed material on the upper torso, worn tucked into the belt of the pants. White trousers had stitched piping down each leg down to the flared cuff, and were worn with standard black boots. A silver Starfleet insignia badge was worn on the chest and silver braids on the sleeve denoted rank. The collar was a raised v-neck, a familiar design choice to Starfleet. The collar was color-coded to the wearers division and branch. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual)
