Stasis, also known as suspended animation, was a complete cessation of movement or activity.

History and specifics

Thousands of years ago, Artemysians developed a long-term stasis process that solved problematic aspects of cryogenics. Their process was similar to freeze drying, in which the subject is first completely dehydrated. Their Grand Council used this process to preserve 100,000 of their species following a global ice age that was expected to last two million years. (TOS comic: "All the Ages Frozen")

In 1963, the Worthy placed themselves in suspended animation on Claneia I. They were revived by the crew of the USS Enterprise-A in 2288. (TOS comic: "A Rude Awakening!")

In 1997, members of a peace movement on Earth fled the Eugenics Wars in a spacecraft and traveled in suspended animation until they arrived on a planet in sector Vega 6 in the 23rd century. (TOS comic: "Sceptre of the Sun")

In 2267, the USS Enterprise placed many crew members into stasis to prevent the spread of space cafard. (TOS novel: Mission to Horatius)

In 2273, the USS Enterprise discovered that the natives of Zeta Reticuli II had placed themselves in suspended animation and revived them. (TOS comic: "We Are Dying, Egypt, Dying!")

In 2381, Beverly Crusher placed Matthew in stasis pending surgery for organ damage caused by a pathogen he had picked up at the iy'Dewra'ni refugee camp on Pacifica. (TNG novel: Losing the Peace)
