Sterilite chemical makeup

The chemical makeup of sterilite.

Sterilite is a drug available to Starfleet medicine in the 23rd and 24th centuries.

Specifics[]

It was a strong antibiotic safe for use with most humanoid species and often used after surgical procedures, particularly those undertaken outside of a sterile environment. (FASA RPG modules: Cadet's Orientation Sourcebook, Star Fleet Intelligence Manual)

It was the most potent anti-infective available to the Federation in the late 23rd century. It quickly interfered with the metabolic processes of microbial cells with no reported side effects or toxicity to patients. Dosage depended on the wound being treated. (ST reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual)

Sterilite was included in Starfleet medical field kits along with coradrenaline, dylovene and tri-ox compounds. Hyposprays could be loaded with 6-dose charges. Starfleet medical pouches came with 12 doses. (FASA RPG modules: Trader Captains and Merchant Princes, 2nd edition, Star Fleet Intelligence Manual)

Sterilite was also available to Klingon physicians in the 23rd century. (FASA RPG module: The Klingons)

Manufacturing[]

It was traditionally distilled from petroleum products using chemical reactions as a catalyst. One ingredient was Puff Dust, a fungus native to Pluuh II. (Stardate Magazine vol. 1, Issue 1: "Making Your First Million", FASA RPG module: The Triangle)

Bio/Genetic Research Incorporated developed an alternative manufacturing process. Though genetic engineering, it made an organism that ate sugars and produced sterilite. (Stardate Magazine vol. 1, Issue 1: "Making Your First Million")

Uses[]

In 2267, Spock was treated with sterilite after surgery to repair a bullet wound incurred on Neural. (TOS episode & Star Trek 10 novelization: A Private Little War)

Sterilite seemed more like an antiseptic field of light than a drug in the episode. In the novelization, it was described as having an "eerie glow".

Also that year, Leonard McCoy surgically separated conjoined Princes Abon and Delor. For the next two days, the twins were treated with sterilite. (TOS novel: Gemini)

In May 2377, when summoned for emergency triage at the dilithium mining facility on Drema IV, Katherine Pulaski put together a medkit filled with hyposprays full of sterilite, asinolyathin and dylovene. (CoE - What's Past eBook: Progress)
