The Strongpoint class[1] was a 23rd century Federation space station type, a massive starbase[2] in Starfleet service from the 2230s[3] to the 2250s<ref> decades. (DSC episode: "Choose Your Pain", The Official Starships Collection Issue Special Issue 04: "Starbase 1")
Specifications[]
Layout[]
Structurally, this starbase type consisted of a saucer-shaped primary hull, with a 3,074.62 meter diameter, placed underneath a long, reinforced, stalk-like secondary hull. A quartet of vertical wings stretched from the top of the habitat rings to the stalk's reinforcements. (DSC episode: "Choose Your Pain")
The portion of the stalk extending below the saucer housed the station's main power- and life support systems. The primary hull served as home for 80.000 Starfleet personnel, civilians, and transient visitors.
The saucer or rings were divided into habitats imitating Earth-like or Class M planet climate zones and vegetation, including temperate alpine zones, and deserts. The lights attached to the ceiling recreated a day-night cycle. (The Official Starships Collection Issue Special Issue 04: "Starbase 1")
Overall, this starbase type bore resemblance to an upside-down, angular Sierra-class station. (STO - Age of Discovery mission: "Downfall")
Armaments[]
By 2270, at least some Sierra-class deep-space stations were armed, including Starbase 24. (TOS novel: Agents of Influence)
In contrast, Starbase 1 relied on deflector shields and nearby allied vessels for defense. If necessary, assigned vessels could evacuate the station over the course of several minutes. (STO - Age of Discovery missions: "Downfall", "Defense of Starbase One")
History[]
Space stations of this type were in service by the 2230s decade. The Burnham family, consisting Section 31 agents Gabrielle and Mike Burnham, and their daughter Michael, lived on such a station in the early 2230s, Torus 4 Deep Space Research Outpost. Michael's bedroom contained a model of the station. Around that time, a lightning storm in space was active in the station's vicinity. (Short Treks episode: "The Girl Who Made the Stars")
In the year 2256, Vice Admiral Katrina Cornwell conferred with starship commanders aboard such station during the Federation-Klingon War of 2256-2257. After Captain Gabriel Lorca of the USS Discovery departed the station in a Class C shuttlecraft, he was captured by a Sech-class prison barge. (DSC episode: "Choose Your Pain")
In 2257, Fleet Admiral Kensington was the commanding officer of Starbase 1, a facility 100 AU from Earth, in orbit of a Kuiper Belt planetoid. The station suffered raids by the resurgent Klingon Empire and crippled the picket ships assigned for defense. The USS Malachowski led the defend with the USS Ticonderoga and USS Sebrova when House Mo'Kai vessels appeared. Matriarch J'Ula fired a mycelial network-based weapon from her flagship IKS Lukara, sending herself, her fleet and Starfleet personnel into the year 2410. Meanwhile, Kensington died in an explosion when her section of the station was hit, but had pulled off the evacuation of station personnel and civilians. The Ticonderoga and the Sebrova remained as the station's sole defense when an incoming fleet of House D'Ghor was detected. (STO - Age of Discovery mission: "Downfall")
House D'Ghor conquered Starbase 1 and painted their family crest on its hull. 274 crew and a few picket ships defended their new hold in the Sol star system. It was surrounded by debris and wrecks, including the burned hulk of the Sebrova. Vice Admiral Cornwell and the Discovery found the station in this state and were forced to leave by Klingon ships. (DSC episode: "The War Within, The War Without")
The Klingons retreated behind their border when the war ended soon after. (DSC episode: "Will You Take My Hand?")
In 2410, the Khitomer Alliance trained its personnel in combat against House Mo'Kai through a holographic re-enactment of the Capture of Starbase 1. In the scenario, the 5-ship special task forces were successful in repelling waves of Klingon warships. (STO - Age of Discovery mission: "Defense of Starbase One")
Mirror universe[]
In the mirror universe, the Terran Empire's Starfleet operated a station of this type in the Beta Quadrant, Starbase K-3. In one permutation of the Terran universe, the ISS Shenzhou under Captain Airiam docked at this station in late 2256. The Shenzhou destroyed the station upon its departure. (DSC - Succession comic: "Issue 2")
Soon after, Airiam reported to Terran Control that rebels had destroyed SB K-3. (DSC - Succession comic: "Issue 3")
