Hiring Free Traders

In the year 2274, he negotiated with Starfleet Academy Cadet Kyoshi Nogura to provide obstacles for a starship race the cadet was organizing in honor of his grandfather, Fleet Admiral Heihachiro Nogura. But after getting half the payment, Sturdevant took Kyoshi and his friends captive for ransom, then took his pirate ship to the Hydra Daco system and destroyed one of the racing ships, the USS Rim Explorer.

Becoming overly ambitious by his success, he followed the rescuing USS Enterprise to the Thoris Amarnis IV, planning a similar fate for that Federation ship, then selling the wreckage to the Klingons. Payment was deposited into the Free Trader's bank on Beta V, but by then the cadets escaped imprisonment and disabled the pirate ship's cloaking device. Captains James T. Kirk and Vera DiMarco boarded the ship and captured Sturdevant at gunpoint. He eagerly surrendered to avoid facing the wrath of the Klingons for failure to deliver the Enterprise upon payment. (TOS comic: "The Nogura Regatta")
