In the 23rd century, the Styrans were threatened with extinction when erratic solar eruptions began occurring on the third star of their system. To save them, the Federation Science Council initiated Project Atlas, in which the Styrans were converted into biomagnetic recordings, which were stored in a handheld sphere. They Styrans were threatened again when Anzar stole the recordings and held them for ransom. Anzar was captured and the recordings were recovered by the crew of the USS Enterprise.
