The Supermarine Spitfire was a type of aircraft flown on Earth in the 20th century. It was a fighter used in combat during World War II, including the Battle of Britain. (DS9 episode: "Accession")
History[]
On 19 August 1942, Spitfires and Hawker Typhoons were tasked with eliminating anti-aircraft weapons batteries during the Allies' Dieppe Raid on German-held Dieppe, France. In 2372, Julian Bashir and Miles O'Brien witnessed Spitfires and Typhoons in flight during a holosuite recreation of the raid. (DS9 - Explorer short story: "A Year to the Day I Saw Myself Die")
During the 1940s decade, at least three Spitfires were stolen by the Collector for his vehicle museum on Beton III.
By the 2260s, these Spitfires were still in the Collector's museum. They were maintained in flight condition, fueled, and kept in an exhibit next to a Vickers Wellington bomber and several robot replica British airmen. Other British aircraft in the museum included a British Avro Lancaster bomber and a Gloster Gladiator biplane fighter.
In the 2260s, the Collector activated three robot replicas to pilot the Spitfires in a dogfight against the Wellington, which was manned by Captain James T. Kirk and Commander Spock. With creative maneuvering, Spock forced two of the Spitfires to crash into one another. Kirk fired the Wellington's aft machine gun turrets and shot down the third Spitfire. The replicas' piloting skills were insufficient against Spock's combat training. (TOS comic: "The Collector")
Legacy[]
In the year 2120, young Jonathan Archer kept a replica Spitfire in his bedroom, along with models of a biplane, Saturn V rocket, and the warp ship Phoenix. (ENT - Waypoint comic: "The Fragile Beauty of Loyalty")
In 2231, Montgomery Scott kept a hologram of a Spitfire in his childhood bedroom, along with holograms of the HMS Enterprise, a space shuttle and a freighter. (TOS comic: "Scotty")
In 2372, in Quark's holosuite simulations of the Battle of Britain, Julian Bashir and Miles O'Brien portrayed Spitfire pilots for Britain's Royal Air Force. Bashir once invited Odo to join them, and O'Brien once mused whether Morn would make a better Spitfire pilot than darts player. (DS9 episodes: "Homefront", "Accession")
