A sur-snake.

A sur-snake.

A sur-snake was a huge aquatic animal species native to the planet Argo.

Specifics[]

Sur-snakes were protected, rare creatures with four finned tentacles that lived in Argo's oceans and appeared like a whale/snake hybrid. (Adventures RPG module: The Animated Series Supplemental Guide)

They were called cpheryhm-aj in the language of the native Argoan Aquans. (TAS - Log Five novelization: The Ambergris Element)

They resembled Denebian whales and were catalogued as duitra. (ST reference: The Worlds of the Federation)

Sur-snakes had a dual respiratory system, with lungs and gills. (TAS episode & Log Five novelization: The Ambergris Element, TTN novel: Over a Torrent Sea)

The unofficial Star Trek Concordance noted that sur-snakes could shoot venom out of their mouths, perhaps to stun prey.

History[]

Ambergris from sur-snakes was a key ingredient in a compound able to change Aquans into water-breathers, which saved the Aquans from extinction-level seismic disturbances.

In the year 2270, a sur-snake attacked the class S-4 aquashuttle NCC-1701/5A. Pilot Jimmy Clayton stunned it with phasers, then submerged the craft so the crew could take a closer look. It revived quickly, however, and came at the shuttle again. Clayton directed the shuttle to retreat at high speed, but the creature pursued and crumpled it. James T. Kirk and Spock became trapped underwater, and a group of young Aquans rescued them by surgically mutating them to breathe water.

Rila, Nefrel, and Lemas helped Kirk and Spock collect additional ambergris from a sur-snake to help them return to normal. (TAS episode & Log Five novelization: The Ambergris Element)

Alternate timelines[]

In an alternate timeline beset by the temporal anomaly crisis, a version of Montgomery Scott was pulled into the late 24th century who was a skilled survivalist capable of rescuing Kirk and Spock from a sur-snake. (ST video game: Timelines)

Legacy[]

The rogue AI Badgey based a holodeck drill on Kirk and Spock's visit to Argo, with Brad Boimler and Sam Rutherford being mutated into water breathers after a sur-snake wrecked a USS Cerritos shuttle. Tears of the sur-snake were needed to reverse the mutation. Boimler couldn't make it sad, but Kimolu was mean enough to make it sob. (LD video game: The Badgey Directive episode: "Eau de Ambergris")
