Surfing originated in Polynesia and became popular in the American states of Hawaii and California.

Prynn Tenmei was taught to surf by Kalena Hoku. (DS9 novel: Twilight) When Tenmei visited Andoria, she was disappointed that surfing was not known there, with the Andorians not using their waters for recreation. (DS9 novel: Andor: Paradigm)
