The Swarm were a hostile and territorial humanoid race in the Delta Quadrant encountered by the USS Voyager in 2373. Not much was known about them, except that when ships went into their space either they disappeared or came back with dead crews. Their language was very complex, consisting of rapid clicks. Translating with a universal translator proved extremely difficult. The Voyager crew could barely translate more than the rough meaning of a few phrases. The Swarm had shuttlecraft-sized ships that worked together in large groups to disable bigger ships. They did this by swarming the bigger ship, landing on the hull, draining power from it, and finally transporting a boarding party aboard. (VOY episode: "The Swarm")
Alternate timeline[]
In an alternate timeline, the Doctor sent an auxiliary medical probe in a small, unmanned craft through Swarm space to Vidiian space to help cure the Phage. The Swarm never noticed the ship, but the Vidiians did.
Later on, the Voyager backtracked through Swarm territory to locate refugees displaced by the Caretaker and offer them a place in the Delta Coalition, losing at least one of its crew in the journey. (VOY - Myriad Universes - Infinity's Prism novella: Places of Exile)
